Has anyone ever started a history movie theatre after school?  What movies would be on list?

Actually I have - and am doing again this year - every Tuesday and Thursday.  We're trying to incorporate films for 6th Grade Contemporary World Cultures and 7th Grade Texas history too.  Additionally, we're going to have the kids actually make videos on different themes and moments in history.

Traditionally though, the other 8th grade US History teacher and I split it up and show for 8th graders...

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and/or 12 Angry Men

The New World/Pocahontas

Last of the Mohicans

Johnny Tremaine

1776

Revolution (sometimes...depends)

Parts of The Patriot (must skip hatchet scene and some others...and we do a Truth/Fiction chart with it)

Excerpts from John Adams

Amistad

Excerpts/different parts of Roots

Gettysburg

Excerpts from Gone with the Wind (Atlanta scene)

Glory

The Conspirator (students went to movie last year; now it's released on dvd)

Dances with Wolves

Far and Away

We also show a few of Liberty Kids series, some things like Meet Dr. Franklin...and some old Sunday night Disney specials especially those on Daniel Boone, Bear Flag Republic.  We don't show any of the Texas history films for 8th since they're used in 7th - like The Alamo (old and new), True Women, Giant, Apollo 13, etc.

For 6th grade:  Gods Must be Crazy, Cry Freedom, Medicine Man/Fern Gully, etc.

The lists are evolving, and nothing is set in stone.  Hope this helps. :)
