Comment by Jen Medwid on July 6, 2011 at 10:56pm: @leticia - biggest struggle my 10th graders have is adjusting to higher level texts. The more they read and the more you scaffold and teach literacy skills for understanding historical texts, the better off they will be.

Thesis statements would be another one... no more restating the question, we need to gradually build their confidence in making historical arguments and backing them up with evidence

Comment by Eric Howe on June 14, 2011 at 12:41pm: We were given a coffee mug (w/ lid) at the reading this year... doesn't do much to prevent a spill though. Not that it happened at the reading table!

The reading was a great experience for me, helping to validate some things I've been doing with regards to essay instruction, but it also opened my eyes a bit as well. If you haven't gone to a reading yet, apply as soon as you are able to and get on the waiting list!
