This is my fourth year using the interactive student notebook.  I love the organization it provides for my students and for me.  In the four years I've used them, I can count on one hand the number that have been lost which means students are no longer losing handouts and the like.  Most of the ideas I've used and modified have come from the wiki on interactive student notebooks.  Unlike a lot of people I put the content on the left side and students output is on the right side.  I used binders the first year, but the pages tore out too easily, so I switched to spiral notebooks.  I learned halfway through my first year with those to duct tape the spiral part.  This keeps the cover from getting torn off.  I think everyone just has to kind of dive in and see what does and doesn't work for them individually and for the students that you teach.

I am looking at using interactive notebooks for the first time next year.  Does anyone have any suggestions (does and don't)?

I loved using an interactive notebook.  I've done PD on it many times and wrote a chapter on it in my book.  But here is the ppt file in case any ideas can help - or if you'd like to use it as a starting point for discussion.  It REALLY helped me employ change over time and themes - as well as organizing my assignment structure in class!.  The History Notebook

I used interactive notebooks last year- somewhat ineffectively, and for the most part the kids liked them. I was going to use them this year with my sophomore World History class, but never had time to map out my course and plan the notebook. I'm hoping to use them next year, after having taught the class once.

Chris-
My first year as well. I am really liking the structure and that most kids do seem to like them. I am asking their opinion tomorrow about them on a survey. So we shall see if they really do like than and understand their purpose. Are you coming across those students that just aren't understanding the point behind the left hand side?

This is my first year using a interactive notebook. The students seem to reLly like the idea and I like how "most" of them are learning some great skills like keeping up with all their work!
